With exams around Education Deptt asks coaching centres, schools to hold extra classes | Department awakes from slumber to correct wrongs | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Oct 1: Department of School Education has always been found wanting when it comes to acting against the coaching centres operating in the state. The same got proved yet again today with the department showing desperation. Director School Education Kashmir, Dr. Ghulam Nabi Itoo today convened a meeting of the administrators of private schools and coaching centres. The Director asked the higher ups of schools and coaching centres to arrange extra classes for the completion of syllabus well before Board examinations. For the last nine months or so the coaching centres have been offering coaching to the students who are appearing in the various examinations being conducted by State Board of School Education in Kashmir. Despite such a huge time duration it is no less than a surprise that syllabus is yet to be completed in the coaching centres. A group of parents while sharing their views with Early Times said that stern action needs to be taken against the coaching centres that have not completed their syllabus as yet. They lamented that lack of punitive action has emboldened management of these coaching centres and they are dictating terms to the parents. "Our children have been attending the coaching classes since January this year and the syllabus is yet to be completed. This calls for proper investigation by the Department of School Education, but we are afraid that the same will not happen. This is the preparation time for examinations and the children should have been at home these days," said the parents. Some of the parents whose children are appearing in the matriculation examination said that there are many schools that are yet to conduct the golden test for their students. They said that such a test should have been held long back adding that un-necessary pressure is being exerted on students with delay in holding the test. "The coaching centres operate round the year and there is no break whatsoever. On the other hand the government and private schools remain closed during gazetted holidays, strikes, restrictions and other related things. One can understand slackness in the educational institutions but why so with the coaching centres," said the parents. The parents said that the higher ups of the Department of School Education never bother to check the progress report of the schools and the coaching centres vis-à-vis completion of syllabus. They said that desperation is shown by the department as and when dates of different Board examinations are announced. "For the major part of the year the teachers in the schools and coaching centres give a damn to the curriculum structure and take things for granted. Despite the fact that strikes and restrictions have become an inseparable part of life in Kashmir the teachers are not willing to learn any lesson. They take things lightly and are pushed to the wall at the fag end of academic session," said parents. It would be in place to mention here that Board examinations in Kashmir are starting from October 22, 2018. While the 10+2 examination is starting on October 22, the examination for 10th class would commence on October 24. The examination for 11th class would start from October 26. |
