Jammu, Oct 1: The parking lot of the Wave Mall Jammu has become huge money spinning racket and a hub of tax evasion while all the concerned Government agencies have assumed mysterious silence over the issue.
Sources disclose the multi- level parking lot of the mall is supposed to provide parking space to the guests turning up into the mall and not to be used as a commercial parking lot; but the owners are charging Rs. 30/- as parking fee from each vehicle. "Not just this, they are charging the illegal parking fee in cash and do not accept payment through card" said a visitor, who questioned the huge collection through parking by cash. "The daily collection of the parking lot runs into lakhs and the entire amount is collected in cash and there is no record of the transaction" said a noted businessman of the city, who offered to pay the fee electronically by card. "When I offered to pay by a swipe, I was told that they did not have any account, which is astounding and hints at a case of hefty tax evasion" he added.
ET learnt that huge undeclared cash is collected through parking fee each day, but since there is no record, no tax is paid to the government on it. "The entire idea of not accepting electronic payments is to evade tax as keeping an account will invite tax obligations" said a visitor to the mall. "I have received a parking slip, which has no counter foil or date on it and this too is demanded back while leaving the mall" he added showing his parking slip.
The authorities concerned cannot be oblivious of this illegality; but they have assumed a mysterious silence for obvious reasons. "While the JDA must take cognizance of the parking fee being charged illegally by the Mall, the tax authorities should inquire into the huge tax evasion taking place at the mall through parking lot.
The illegality came to the fore the previous day, when an aware citizen questioned the charging of parking fee even as he did not get space to park his vehicle in the designated parking lot and later when he insisted on paying through card. |
