Field day on maize organised under Farmer 'FIRST' programme | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 5: A field day on maize was organized at village Sataha in block Nud of district Samba under Farmer 'FIRST' programme of the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu. The programme was attended by senior functionaries of the state agricultural department as well as scientists from different disciplines of the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu. About 300 farmers including farm women from different villages of block Nud also attended the function. A vegetables stall was also displayed on this occasion by the vegetable growers under Farmer FIRST Programme. While welcoming the participants Dr. Sanjay Khajuria Scientist Agro forestry highlighted the importance of such field days in promoting technology dissemination and its adoption by the farming community. He also highlighted the role of various medicinal trees and aromatic grasses in increasing the income. Dr. A .P. Singh Sr. Scientist and in charge AICRPDA, Rakh Dhiansar gave a detailed lecture on the scientific cultivation of maize. He also briefed the farmers about various soil as well as the water conservation practices. Dr. Vinod Kumar Sr. Scientist, Agricultural Extension talked at length about the government's mission of doubling farmer's income and the various ways in which the farmers can augment their income. He advised the farmers to go for diversification. Dr. Neerja Gupta Floriculturist discussed about the scientific cultivation of marigold and how marigold cultivation can increase the income of farmers. Dr. Parveen Kumar gave a brief presentation on how different interventions to the farmers under the farmer 'FIRST' programme have resulted in increase in their income. He further told that the farmer who were given hybrid variety of maize under farmer FIRST had an incremental income of rupees 3140 per family. Similarly in case of wheat the incremental income per family was rupees 2260 per family. Under integrated farming system module, the families under Rural backyard poultry increased their income by rupees 9000 each and those under mushroom had an additional income of rupees 2060. |
