How safe are Ayurvedic drugs? | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 12: While the quality of allopathic drugs in Jammu Kashmir has wreaked havoc with the lives of gullible people, the Ayurvedic drugs sold in Kashmir have also been found to be spurious. With more and more people preferring Indian System of Medicine (ISM) for treatment, the authorities need to ensure supply of quality Ayurvedic drugs to government hospitals, said a spokesman of the Doctors Association. Besides, the private outlets, he said, also need to be monitored. It is widely believed that no drug license is needed for selling Ayurvedic drugs. The results are obvious. There has been an alarming increase in Ayurvedic drug shops. Some time ago, the Doctors Association issued a statement identifying five drugs, Kanchnar guggulu, Prostate forte, Systonex syp, Jaytyadii taila and Rajparvartinvati which, according to the association, were spurious and contaminated. Pertinently these drugs were procured and supplied by ISM department bypassing Jammu and Kashmir Medical Supplies Corporation ((JKMSL) was created to do away with the corrupt purchase committees and curb the menace of spurious drugs. Ironically it is very difficult to know how many precious lives might have been lost because of these drugs as patient is always presumed to have died from a disease rather than the drugs. The menace of spurious drugs spreading to Ayurvedic, Unani and Homeopathic medicines is a matter of grave concern as many patients rely on these medicines. Many a patient suffering from cough and cold, constipation or diarrhea, arthritis and urine problem opt for the Ayurvedic medicines. Jammu Kashmir is a safe bastion for spurious drugs as the market is unregulated and unchecked. There has been much uproar over quality of Allopathic medicines. The government also framed a new drug policy but it awaits implementation. Now we have the same problem with Ayurvedic medicines. India is the capital of spurious drugs and according to WHO, India accounts for nearly 35% of world's spurious drug market. In an estimate 40% of the Indian market is under the grip of spurious drugs. These spurious drugs find their way easily in the neglected state of Jammu Kashmir. The authorities have to wake up and do the needful. |
