For transfers on 'Sufarish', SMC violates model code of conduct | Housing Deptt to probe 'Chai Pani' angle | | Early Times Report srinagar, Oct 12: In brazen violation of norms, the Srinagar Municipal Corporation has been resorting to transfers during the ongoing model code of conduct in the wake of Urban Local body polls being held in the state. Sources said since the announcement of urban local body polls, including that for the SMC, several transfers have taken place in the civic body. Sources said the transfers have been taking place on "chai pani" and "political pressures" as some of the regional parties have fielded proxy candidates for SMC polls. Sources said through transfers within the civic body the SMC wants to allegedly benefit the candidates of the regional parties who have "influence in the civic body." In one such case, the Chief Sanitation Officer of the SMC has issued formal orders for transfers of two officials on October 6. Official documents, a copy of which lies with Early Times reveals that the transfers have been executed in the garb of "interest of the government than that of the politicians." "In the interest of the administration and improvement of sanitation Mr Abdul Ahad Sheikh I/C Sanitary Supervisor Ward No 30 and Bilal Ahmed Sheikh I/C Sanitary Supervisor Ward 22 shall swap their place of postings with immediate effect. They shall be deemed to have been relieved from the present place of posting," reads the transfer order. Sources said several such "hurried" transfers have taken place in the past around a month since the day the model code of conduct was announced. Sources said some of the officials in the SMC have come under scanner for having made transfers to allegedly benefit some politicians. "What we have got to know is that the transfers were either made to meet political interests or for chain paani but the allegations can be verified only if a formal complaint is registered," said a senior official in the Housing department. He said the department was waiting for a nod from the Raj Bhawan to initiate inquiry. When contacted the SMC officials downplayed the matter. "Such minor transfers are a routine matter and it hardly matters if the model code of conduct is in place. We do such transfers in the interest of the administration and the same is duly mentioned in all such transfer orders," said the official. |
