SKUAST organizes awareness programme for vegetables growers

JAMMU, Nov 1: An awareness programme on promoting safe use of Pesticides in vegetable crops was organized by the Division of Entomology, SKUAST-Jammu at Marh in collaboration with Directorate of Agriculture, Jammu.
More than 50 progressive farmers from different villages participated in the training programme. The training programme was sponsored by NABARD under project entitled "Scientific intervention for validation and popularization of traps for management of insect pests in vegetable growing areas of Jammu Region". The major objective of the programme was to sensitize the participants about "safe use of pesticides viz. use of right pesticides at right time using right technique and promoting IPM techniques" with an emphasis on management of major insect pest problems in vegetable crops.
The programme dealt with different aspects of vegetable crop pest management. Participants were given hands-on-training to identify different pests (insects and diseases) and their symptoms. Detail training was imparted on the occurrence of pests in relation to weather conditions and their management strategies. Participants were informed about the rules and regulations related to pesticides, their labels, poisoning and safe handling.
A practical demonstration IPM techniques viz. pheromone traps and botanicals was held in the field. Dr. Devinder Sharma, PI of the project emphasized the need to adopt the preventive and scientific methods to manage insect-pests of vegetable crops.
He apprised the participants that main aim of organizing such programmes was to make awareness among the farmers about the latest scientific techniques especially the popularization adoption of pheromone/sticky and bait traps for the integrated insect pest management in vegetable crops. Dr. Amit Kumar Singh Co-PI of the project urged up on the farmers to abstain from using excessive pesticides and adopt those measures which do not affect the environment and human health.
He demonstrated the low cost scientifically validated technologies for the control of various insect-pests in the vegetable crops. There was discussion among scientists and farmer participants on various issues of pest management.
On this occasion SDM Tariq Hussain was guest in the training programme. He urged the farmers to make full use of such training and stressed agriculture department to disseminate the latest techniques among farmers. Dr. Vishal Gupta and Dr. S. K. Singh expert in biocontrol stressed the farmers to adopt organic farming which promotes and enhances agro-eco system of health including bio diversity, biological cycles and soil biological activity.
Dr. Manoj Kumar discussed the best agriculture practices in raining vegetable crops. AEO Marh, J. S. Johar popularize the various government schemes and stressed upon the farmers to use IPM strategies to promote eco-friendly and economically viable methods in vegetable crops. On this occasion traps were distributed to the selected farmers being for pesticide-free management of insect-pests problem in vegetables. The farmers requested University to conduct more and more such training programme for benefitting farming community.
