Illegal mining in Tawi bed unabated; Concerned deptts unmoved | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Nov 1: Despite High Court ban on mining of River Tawi bed, the illegal excavation of sand and gravel continues unabated near Sidhra Bridge in broad day light but the concerned agencies remain mute spectators. The practice of the illegal excavation at Tawi Bed by the tractors, tippers has been going on unchecked. Earlier, illegal mining could be seen during wee hours but now it has been going on during broad day light that too under the nose of the police as the police check post is very near to this site where tractors, tippers were excavating sand and gravels. The most shocking part of the incident is that despite the presence of the Geological and Mining Department, Police and Forest Department near this spot in Sidhra area, the mining was taking place without any fear and restriction. Sidhra Police post is situated just near the site of illegal activity yet they take no action. Sources told Early Times that firstly government makes laws against mining in river bed and then the implementing agencies in connivance with mining mafia help them to carry out illegal excavation allegedly in lieu of monetary benefits. Even though, the mining near any bridge is strictly prohibited yet its violation is unabated. Ever since the ban has been imposed on exploitation of this natural resource, the corruption is ruling the roost due to increasing demand of the building material and corrupt officials have been filling their coffer causing huge loss to the state revenue and environment. |
