Congress was 'divided' on alliance with NC, PDP | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Nov 22: Even as the Governor SP Malik has dissolved the state Assembly ending high drama over prospective formation of government in the state, Congress is understood to have been divided on any alliance with the National Conference and the Peoples Democratic Party. Sources said the party leadership in New Delhi was not convinced with the proposal to form government with the two regional parties and term it "Maha Ghatbandhan." Sources said one of the senior Congress leaders from south Kashmir had been in support of alliance with senior PDP leader Altaf Bukhari as the chief minister. But another senior leader who joined Congress after quitting the PDP was against the idea. Sources said apart from this division in the state chapter, the senior Congress leaders in New Delhi were skeptical of the alliance given the fact that the Parliament elections are scheduled to be held in the coming months. "They (Congress high command) was not in support of the idea of alliance as its effects on the 2019 prospects of the elections were being weighed. The proposal was still in its infancy stage," said a senior Congress leader on the condition of anonymity. Sources said some of the Congress leaders were against the very idea of alliance with PDP which had ditched the national party in 2008. "How could we forget that they (PDP) had stabbed us in the back over Amarnath Land row when our chief minister was giving good governance. Puling out of alliance was deceit that time, so we didn't want alliance with traitors," said a senior leader. Sources said amid a divided opinion, the Congress leadership was planning to call a meeting in the national capital to decide future course of action. Some of the senior leaders of the party including those from Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh were to be called to attend the meeting. "But before any such meeting the Governor dissolved the Assembly," the sources added. Sources said many of the senior leaders have expressed a sigh of relief over the dissolution of Assembly. "In the hearts of our hearts, most of us are happy that a major controversy has been avoided though an honorable exit," said the Congress leader. |
