Despite having 25 MLAs it couldn't muster courage to stake claim for govt formation | BJP went out of way to appease Sajad Lone | | Early Times Report Jammu, Nov 22: Bharatiya Janata Party by extending support to Peoples Conference to form the government in Jammu and Kashmir proved it beyond doubt that the party had once again surrendered before the Kashmir centric parties and had in principle agreed to become a second fiddle once again. An analyst while talking to Early Times said that BJP had 25 seats in the recently dissolved Assembly in Jammu and Kashmir and if it enjoyed the support of 20 more MLAs it should have staked the claim to form the government rather than asking Sajad Lone, who had got just two MLAs, to send a letter to the Governor to stake the claim for the government formation. "Had the Governor Malik not dissolved the Assembly and accepted Lone's claim he would have emerged as the Chief Minister as the Governor would have asked him to prove his majority at the floor of the house," the analyst added. He said that BJP has once again proved that it gives a "damn" to the sentiments of the Jammu people and it is only interested in power. "Is it that the BJP leaders have no confidence to rule the state or is it that they want to remain subservient to the Kashmir centric leaders?" he asked. A politician said that BJP lost a "golden opportunity" to have a Chief Minister from Jammu at place. "If a person with two MLAs could make an attempt to head the state, why couldn't a party with 25 MLAs muster courage to do so? Why was Sajad Lone given undue importance? BJP leaders could have directly entered into talks with the 18 MLAs who had pledged support to Lone. There are many questions which BJP would have to answer in coming days," he added. An observer said that BJP by giving too much space to Lone helped PDP to come out of trouble. "The government formation should have been BJP's prerogative not Sajad Lone's discretion," he added. He said that even in 2015 when the BJP joined hands with the Peoples Democratic Party it (BJP) allowed the PDP to dictate terms and ended by handing over vital portfolios to the Kashmir centric party. "If BJP has to rule the state in future then it would have to change it strategy of becoming a junior partner in any sort of alliance. The BJP leaders have to realize that Jammu is their constituency and they have to safeguard the interests of Jammu region rather than playing into the hands of Kashmir centric leaders," the observer added. |
