Mafia continues extraction of minerals from Tawi river | High Court directions ignored | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Dec 11: Despite the detailed directions to the administration by Division Bench of State High Court to stop illegal extraction of minerals from river Tawi on back side of Sidhra colony here, tractor trollies in connivance with enforcement agencies are openly violating the court orders. In a video footage which is in possession of Early Times it can be clearly seen that scores of tractor trollies brazenly violate court orders in broad day light indicating unholy nexus of tractor trolly owners and enforcement agencies including police. It is pertinent to mention here that the J&K High Court had two years ago imposed a ban to keep a check on the uncontrolled extraction of minerals from local rivers like the Tawi, near Sidhra bypass bridge, Jajjar nullah and Kattal Battal. The ban was extended from Sidhra bridge to fourth bridge at Bhagwati Nagar while the further expanse of the Tawi was open for extraction at both ends. Besides, there is a High Court direction which the tractor drivers have to abide. Despite the ban, extraction continues unabated which has not only been causing a huge loss to state exchequer but also damaging strategic bridges, causing soil erosion and impacting the course of the river. "Mining and extraction have always been controlled by a powerful lobby and the lobby has a strong political influence," sources said. The High Court had issued directions to Divisional Commissioner Jammu on Nov 17, 2016 to make full proof arrangement so that no illegal extraction of mineral is done anymore from river Tawi. |
