Mubarak Gul's `reverse swing' hits NC stumps! | Former MLA holds protest against his own self, party legislators | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Dec 25: What greater irony there could be than this that the party that had three out of eight MLAs in state's summer capital is at present protesting over the lack of development in Srinagar. Former speaker and leader of national conference Mubarak Gul on Tuesday along with his several activists staged protest in Srinagar's press enclave, alleging that the city is being ignored on all fronts and that its inhabitants are rung over the lack of basic amenities. However, what the party has perhaps forgotten is the fact that till November 21, when the assembly was dissolved by Governor Satya Pal Malik, it had three out of the total MLAs in Srinagar and two alone from the Srinagar's old city itself. The protest caught many by surprise as people wonder what the party was doing till now and why it woke up from the deep slumber when the governor rule is imposed in the state. "In 2008 elections, NC won all the eight assembly seats of Srinagar. During its six year rule, Srinagar witnessed its worst ever days with development nowhere in sight and basic facilities missing in an outright way all across. In 2014, the party while taking benefit of the poll boycott secured three important seats in Srinagar. Till now, what it was doing for the city that now all of a sudden when polls are slated next year, it begun pitching for the development of Srinagar," says an old city dweller while witnessing the protest in Lal Chowk. NC leader Mubarak Gul along with scores of his activists and locals assembled in Srinagar's Press Enclave in this afternoon and chanted slogans in favour of their demands. Gul said that the government has ignored Shehr-e-Khaas on all fronts, saying that the authorities have even failed to allot a college in Shere-e-khaas. The protest meanwhile is turning counterproductive for the party on social media as well. Hundreds of netizens are targeting the national conference over is present posturing, accusing it of turning Srinagar into hub of mess and chaos while claiming it as party's fort. Even it was during the tenure of national conference that the Srinagar Development Authority (SDA) drafted the Srinagar Master Plan in a hurry and that it hasn't been considerate over the flood prone areas and urbanisation of the summer capital. "It appears that the draft has been prepared only with a sole motive to impress the government and not to take into consideration the issues being confronted by the local populace of Srinagar," says an official privy to the development. Sources divulged that no less than three hundred suggestions have been received by the authority which is being scrutinized in order to incorporate them in the final draft. If sources are to be believed the preparation of the final draft has also hit a road block as the Irrigation and Flood Control Department has raised objections with regard to Shalimar and Athwajan flood zones. |
