Amid snow calamity in Kashmir, Mirwaiz talks about referendum | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Jan 5: Even as heavy snowfall threw life out of gears in Kashmir and five members of a family died due to suffocation in Bemina here, the chairman of Hurriyat M Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was busy discussing referendum in Jammu and Kashmir. As people of Kashmir, including politicians condoled the tragic demise of five of a family, Mirwaiz took to social media to urge the world community to hold the promised referendum in Jammu and Kashmir. "Today on 5 Jan 1949, it is 70 years since UN Security Council passed the resolution to give the people of J&K the universally accepted right to decide their future through UN sponsored plebiscite," said the Mirwaiz on Twitter. Urging the world community to hold the promised referendum, Mirwaiz wrote: "As we suffer forcible control and lose generation after generation to the dispute, we urge the world community to fulfil that commitment and hold the promised referendum. #RightToSelfDeterminationDay." His concern for an odd issue drew public criticism, with people saying "When Rome was burning, Nero was fiddling." The social media users said enjoying palatial life at his bungalow, Mirwaiz had no feel of what people face after heavy snowfall. "Rather than expressing concern on the public woes and the tragedy that took place in Bemina, these Hurriyat leaders are busy with their business," said a college student. Some people said before discussing "referendum", the Mirwaiz should have shown some concern towards the burning issue of snowfall and its aftermath. While Kashmir woke up to see thick blanket on snow with electricity and other services snapped in most of the areas, the news came about tragedy in Bemina. Five members of a family died of asphyxiation at their rented accommodation in Bemina. Reports said the deceased, which include two kids, as many women and a male member, were found dead at Mansoor colony in Bemina today morning. Police said the family appears to have died due to gas leakage. The deceased were residents of Tangdhar in north Kashmir's Kupwara district. Their bodies were likely to be airlifted to the snow bound village in north Kashmir. |
