'No cleanliness possible without ban on poly bags' | | | Ashwani Sharma
Early Times Report
Udhampur, Jan 5: Polythene bag free claims of the authorities fall flat by the chocked drains in the town here as bundles of bags go into them daily. "No cleanliness is possible without a blanket ban on poly bags," Suraj Prakash-a social activist said adding that these carry bags never get destroyed and when thrown in drains they block them leading to further problems. "When these drains are cleared the poly bags are taken out which have garbage packed in them and authorities have yet to finalise what to do with this non-degradable material," Prabha Abrol-an educationist said. A veternarian said that stray cattle eat these poly bags and get sick. On surgery of a cow 40 kg poly bags were removed after which the animal resumed its normalcy. "When eco friendly carry bags are available why shopkeepers are using poly bags," a senior citizen-Dev Raj said adding that the customers should say no to the shopkeepers giving things in poly bags. When contacted Municipal Council sources informed that soon a drive to seize poly bags will be started in the town and fine will be imposed on erring traders. |
