Bandipora, Jan 5: An official of consumer affairs and public distribution department died after slipping from a roof top of his house while clearing snow in Bandipora town of north Kashmir. According to locals a shopkeeper Mumtaz Ahmad of Ward 4 of Bandipora town fell from rooftop while clearing snow, and got seriously injured. He had received serious head injuries after clearing snow from two-storey house today morning, this north Kashmir district has received fresh snowfall of about 1-2 feet at various places, due to which people were seen clearing their rooftops, said local Bashir Ahmad of Bandipora town. He said that the deceased was immediately shifted to district hospital however he died due to grave injuries. The deceased was working in the consumer affairs and public distribution department, due to this incident a pall of gloom descended in the area, he was later buried in an ancestral graveyard, said locals. The Deputy Commissioner Bandipora Shahid Iqbal Choudary has said that the person namely Mumtaz Ahmad (TSO) of CAPD of Ward 4 of Bandipora received serious head injuries after he fell from the rooftop of his two-storey house while clearing the snow. The DC expressed grief over his death and extended assistance of Rs 4 Lakh for the family members. Meanwhile Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Baseer Ahmad Khan, today issued an avalanche warning for nine districts of Kashmir division in view of the inclement weather and snowfall. The warning has been issued for the avalanche-prone areas in district Anantnag, Kulgam, Budgam, Baramulla, Kupwara, Bandipora, Ganderbal, Kargil and Leh. As per a handout, the Divisional Commissioner has asked the Deputy Commissioners of all these districts to advise the people living in avalanche prone areas not to venture out during the snowfall. Besides, they have been directed to take all the precautionary measures and to keep the SDRF, Police and Para-medical staff with ambulances in readiness to deal with any untoward incident. The warning has been also issued by the Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE) Chandigarh; the warning said that there are chances of snow avalanches in the higher reaches of Baramulla and Kupwara. The avalanche warning has categorized the areas as per High Danger, Medium Danger and Low Danger. While as Baramulla and Kupwara fall in High Danger category, Bandipora and Ganderbal has been put in Medium Level danger. Pertinently, many areas of north Kashmir including, Gulmarag, upper reaches of Baramulla district, Gurez in Bandipora district, Chowkibal, Tangdhar, Keran, Karnah and Teetwal has recived fresh snowfall since yesterday evening. While as most of the inner links are still closed and with the result people are still confined in their houses, Gulmarag has received 2 feet snow, Tangdar 2 feet, Chowkibal 15 inches, and Gurez has also received 2 feet of snow since yesterday evening. |
