Amid worsening power scenario, PDD shelves Governor's directions with impunity | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Jan 14: Jammu and Kashmir perhaps is the only state in entire India wherein the discretions of the Governor are rejected by the government departments with impunity. Advisor to Governor, Kewal Kumar Sharma on December 30, last year had stated that the improvements in state's power scenario are expected after the commissioning of the grid station. He also discussed the test charging of Alasteng Grid Station and directed the concerned officials to do it by first week of January. The Advisor was briefed that the 220 KV line connecting 220/132/33 KV Alasteng Grid Station will be commissioned by January ending. The Transmission Line is being constructed by M/S Engineers and Construction Industries (ECI) Hyderabad on turnkey basis. The government spokesman had then stated that Sharma reprimanded the contractor agency for its failure to complete the line in time and directed the Chief Engineer Systems and Operations to initiate action in the matter. However, at present, the Power development Department has made it clear categorically that it was not going to make the grid station functional in January this year. "Wherefrom will we get the man power and wherefrom we will get the machines. We have nothing in hands and therefore we cannot make the grid station functional" said an official privy to the development. He added that the commissioning of the grid station could have resolved the power woes in the state to a large extent, particularly to the people of Kashmir valley. According to the survey conducted by the state dispensation, there were as many as 62 villages in Jammu region that are as on date un-electrified. According to government sources the number of hamlets in the countryside of Jammu could be more with no electricity facilities. In the same survey it has been stated that it is this region that has been giving major share of power revenue. In terms of revenue collection, major revenue is being generated from Jammu, reads the report compiled by state's power department. If reports are to be believed, the electrification of the major hamlets of Jammu province was kept in limbo by the successive regimes of the state despite knowing the fact that these far flung areas are in the dire need of electricity facility as are the people hailing from cities and towns. Furthermore, official documents reveal that in yet another instance of discrimination between Jammu and Kashmir region, under the much hyped Integrated Power Development Scheme (IPDS), Jammu has got a whopping 82 crore less than Valley, leaving thousands of dwellings craving for electricity in lurch. |
