Geelani, Malik sulk as Pak declares Mirwaiz its darling | A telephone call divides Kashmir's separatist camp | | Early Times Report Jammu, Feb 1: The telephone call of a Pakistani Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi to Mirwaiz Umar Farooq seems to have created a wedge within the separatist camp in Valley with others feeling marginalized. Such was the impact of the phone call that on Friday, octogenarian Syed Ali Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq issued statements separately and the joint forum of the separatists called the JRL has been silent ever since the infamous phone call was made. On one side, Mirwaiz issued statement related to the growing drug abuse among the youth and on the other side Geelani issued statement against Governor Malik's recent remarks on 'Azaadi'. Pertinently, Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale on Wednesday summoned Pakistan's envoy Sohail Mahmood in New Delhi and categorically told him that Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi's telephonic conversation with separatist Kashmiri leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was a "brazen attempt" to subvert India's unity and violate its sovereignty and territorial integrity. In a tit-for-tat move, Pakistan on Thursday summoned India's High Commissioner in Islamabad to lodge a protest over the summoning of its envoy in New Delhi, and maintained that it would continue to extend support to the people of Kashmir. Meanwhile, the phone call has caused rifts within the separatists and Geelani and Malik are up in arms against what they termed as sheer discrimination. Meanwhile, this is not the first time when the division has been witnessed within the camp. Earlier, in 2017, speculations were rife that both Hurriyat (M) chairman and Kashmir's chief religious cleric, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and JKLF chairman Yasin Malik were going to stitch a common ground while leaving Geelani in isolation. "There are issues like Geelani presenting himself as a godfather of the current uprising and wants to be remembered as Ameer-ul Mumineen (commander of the faithful). This is not going well within the separatist groups who have forged unity last year," sources said, adding that Geelani's grandson's appointment played a major role in widening the wedge. Furthermore, it was informed that elevation of Shabir Shah as a general secretary of Geelani's amalgam wasn't going well within the constituents of the conglomerate. There were concerns being raised over how a person could be para-trooped while others like the veteran Ashraf Sehrai were being ignored, damned and undermined by the octogenarian. Also there were reports coming to fore that the separatists are alleging Geelani and his son-in-law, who is also the Hurriyat (G) member of using them and then setting personal scores with the helmsmen. It is being questioned that how come Geelani's grandson has been appointed in government service and why the aged separatist has been mute over the allegations being levelled against him. |
