Early Times Report JAMMU, Feb 25: Giving dent to Prime Minister's ambitious scheme Prime Minister Awas Yojana (PMAY), the Jammu and Kashmir Government has failed to achieve target set by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affair. As per the information available with Early Times, the Union ministry of Housing and Urban Affair gave approval for construction of nearly 34,450 pucca house for urban dwellers but ironically, the state government has succeeded only to construct 1,967 urban pucca houses in last four financial years. Sources informed that the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana was launched in June 2015 with an aim to provide affordable housing to urban poor and proposed that under the same scheme, the state government would construct 34,450 urban houses to achieve national wide target of 2 crore by the 2022. "But unfortunately, the urban development department's slow pace to achieve target is depriving the economically weaker sections and low income groups aren't getting the benefit of affordable housing scheme", said sources while wishing anonymity. Sources further said that against the set target, there are 14,009 houses grounded for construction or partially completed while only 3,134 constructed houses have been handed over to urban poor dwellers so far. "Despite incessant thrust from Union Government, the erstwhile BJP-PDP government had miserably failed to fulfil the promise in its tenure made by Prime Minister during launch of the scheme", alleged sources. The callousness on part of Urban Development Department can be gauged from this fact that in financial year 2015-16, only 62 houses were completed whereas in 2017 and 2018 only 26 and 100 pucca houses were constructed and remaining were completed in incumbent financial year, said another sources. |
