Politics of convenience: Mr Omar, but you boycotted the recent ULB, panchayat polls
2/27/2019 11:00:47 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 27: NC vice-president Omar Abdullah has once again urged PM Narendra Modi to order assembly polls in J&K at the earliest, saying to not hold elections at the earliest would mean victory of the forces of separatism and terror. He wants the PM to hold assembly polls along with the general elections, scheduled to be held in April-May.
"Will the Modi government bow before those forces of separatism & terror that have always sought to disrupt/delay polls in J&K or will polls take place on schedule? The moment of truth for PM Modi's handling of Kashmir over the last 5 years," Omar Abdullah said. "Will PM Modi be able to keep to this schedule or will he accept he's totally mishandled J&K? The next few days will give us the answer," he added.
Elections are an integral part of democracy. There should be no doubt about it. Democracy sans elections is not democracy; it's called dictatorship. However, the questions to be asked to Omar Abdullah are many: Is it not a fact that it was his own party which was responsible for Governor/President's rule in J&K between January 19, 1990 and October 9, 1996? It is a fact. Is it not a fact that Farooq Abdullah dissolved the assembly on January 19, 1990 and fled away to London, where he stayed there for years? It is also a fact.
Is it not a fact that the NC boycotted the Lok Sabha elections in 1996? It is also a fact that the NC boycotted the Lok Sabha elections and that it was the Congress which won all the six Lok Sabha seats in the state, 2 in Jammu, 3 in Kashmir and the lone Ladakh Lok Sabha seat.
And, is it also not a fact that the NC, like the separatists and terrorists of all varieties, including Hizbul Mujahideen, Hurriyat Conference (Mirwaiz), Hurriyat Conference (Geelani) and the JKLF, gave call for boycott of Urban Local Bodies and Panchayat elections, held in the whole of the state only recently? It is also a fact. Both the NC and the PDP boycotted the ULB and Panchayat elections.
The fact of the matter is that the NC bowed before those forces of separatism & terror that have always sought to disrupt/delay polls in J&K. Indeed, the NC is playing politics of convenience and this is not fair.
