Why Assembly poll in J&K has been deferred? | | | The Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir have been deferred as they require more security, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), J&K, Shailendra Kumar said after the Chief Election Commissioner announced the Lok Sabha poll. Why the Assembly elections have been deferred? When the team from the Election Commission visited Jammu and Srinagar the Pulwama attack was nothing old in which 40 CRPF personnel were martyred. In view of the fluid security scenario the Assembly poll has been postponed. In view of the precarious security situation it may not be possible for the Commission or the centre or the state Governor to hold the Lok Sabha and Assembly polls simultaneously. Hence the poll dates for the six Lok Sabha constituencies, three in the Kashmir valley, two in the region of and once in Ladakh, have been reserved for six days indicating that security regiments may be shifted from one constituency to the other. More important is the political factor. The BJP has not been able to receive positive response from the voters and hence some the top BJP leaders from the state of Jammu and Kashmir could be utilized for campaigning in favour of the NDA. The BJP does not want to lose the Assembly poll in Jammu and Kashmir brutally. In 2014 it was able to win for the first time 25 seats which enabled it to join the PDP in the formation of a coalition Government. However, during these three years the state unit of the BJP has not been able to come up to the expectations of the voters. Hence senior leaders from the centre, including the Prime Minister, Modi, would be in the forefront of the election campaign in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Hence the poll, to be specific Assembly poll, has been deferred. Political parties, especially the NC and the PDP, wanted holding the Assembly poll in Jammu and Kashmir along with the Lok Sabha elections. But the centre has not favoured the NC proposal because the centre knew it well that the NC would be riding a winning horse during the Assembly poll. Once the NC regained power political matters may assume added disturbing dimensions because both father, Dr Farooq and his son, Omar Abdullah, may kick up issues which could destabilize the law and order situation. And once peace was derailed in Kashmir it may be difficult for the BJP led NDA to win the Lok Sabha elections. |
