Two persons injured as clashes break out at Central Jail Srinagar | | | Jehangir Rashid

SRINAGAR, Apr 5: Two inmates were injured when security forces fired pellets to restore peace in the central jail, Srinagar, where inmates were protesting against the shifting of some jailed persons to Jammu, official sources said. However, officials said the situation is under control now. The authorities suspended internet mobile service in Srinagar to prevent spread of rumours. Restrictions were also imposed in most parts of the down town and all gates of historic Jamia Masjid were closed as a precautionary measure on Friday. Sources said the trouble started last night when some inmates raised slogans against the reports that some persons lodged in the jail would be shifted to outside the valley jails. There are about 280 inmates, including separatists, Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI), Jamaitul Ahalhadees and stone pelters besides convicts in the jail in the down town city. Raising slogans the jail inmates clashed with jail security personnel and also set on fire two barracks. There were loud explosion after LPG cyclinder in the kitchen also caught fire. Clashes continued for most part of the night, they said adding however, security forces and state police personnel did not enter the jail premises to avoid casualities. However, this morning when there was fresh clashes, security forces and state police personnel entered the jail and resorted to lathicharge and also fired pellets in which two inmates were injured. Residents said that there was fire in the jail after clashes. '"We heard loud explosions and firing from the jail," they said, adding that later security forces and state police personnel were deployed in nearby areas to prevent any demonstration. Sources said fire tenders were rushed from different parts of the city, including Fire and Emergency headquarters, Batamloo to control the leaping flames, which were visible from a distance in the jail. Later, Deputy Commissioner Srinagar Shahid Iqbal Choudhary held detailed deliberations with the representatives of inmates over a host of issues, in presence of DIG Central Kashmir, DIG CRPF, SSP Srinagar and other senior officers. The inmates were given to understand that no issues could be heard and redressed in backdrop of such a massive violence and attacks which had the potential of leading to fatalities, and conducive atmosphere was required to ascertain the factors involved in violence of this exceptional nature. The DC asked the inmates to move to into barracks. After detailed deliberations the inmates were moved to barracks and discussion held with all concerned. In view of massive damages to Government property an inter-departmental team comprised of PWD, PHE and PDD was deputed by the district administration for loss assessment and restoration work. The incident was triggered when the inmates resisted the move of jail administration for restoration of barracks which have been damaged over a period of time. A spokesperson of the administration stated that some pictures were being circulated in social media indicating an alleged desecration inside central jail however fact of the matter remains that during entire night no security personnel, or officials, moved inside the barrack premises and all the issues raised by the inmates are being ascertained however violence and mob-attack of such a level cannot be condoned. Meanwhile, mobile internet was suspended in most parts of the city to prevent rumours. It is reported a building and two barracks besides kitchen of the jail were damaged in the fire. |
