Why census in J&K in 2020, not in 2021? | HM needs to review his stand | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Apr 5: The next census of India will be carried out in 2021 with 1 March of that year as the reference date, the Home Ministry has announced. A notification to the effect that the decision has been taken by the central government under the powers conferred by Section 3 of the Census Act, 1948 (37 of 1948). "The central government hereby declares that a census of the population of India shall be taken during the year 2021," the notification said. However, it also said that census would be held in Jammu & Kashmir in October, and not in March 2021. "For Jammu and Kashmir, the reference date shall be the first day of October, 2020," the notification said. It would be only appropriate if the next census of India was held in Jammu and Kashmir, along with all other states and Union territories on March 1, 2021. Such an approach would help correct many of the past wrongs and also help know what exactly is the number of people who actually inhabit Jammu and Kashmir on that particular day. The country witnesses census operation every ten year. The last census was held in 2011, which had put the number of Indian population at 121 crore. The census exercise is a very important exercise conducted simultaneously across the country. |
