After poll victory, NC forgets 'separate PM' slogan | Politics makes strange bedfellows! | | Early Times Report Jammu, June 1: National Conference in a discreet manner has shifted from its ideology and promises, merely a week after winning parliament polls in Kashmir, with the party patriarch not making any mention of its demand of separate Prime Minister for J&K. NC contested the recently held parliament polls keeping the so-called autonomy as a major poll plank. As the party swept all three parliament seats of Kashmir Valley, it seems to have subtly changed its goal post. On Saturday, NC president Dr. Farooq Abdullah called for comprehensive multi-tier health policy for the state that focuses on reform, saying that the need of hour is to establish mechanisms that can amplify the availability of health care institutions to people across the state. Abdullah while addressing a public meeting at Beerwah constituency said that the access to effective health care systems will be a major challenge for him. He added that the challenge for the forthcoming government was to increase the quality of health care. "Once in power the NC government under the able and dynamic Omar will ensure heavy emphasis on subsidizing health care for poor," he said, adding that the party when in power will come up with a course of action towards helping those families whose loved ones are suffering from fatal ailments, besides that the new government will undertake and look after the nutrition and medication of the patients suffering from critical diseases. "We in our party firmly believe that people are the source of power and the government is there only to serve them. I am sure we will be able to achieve that anticipated end of revolutionizing the health sector of state through effective policy interventions and out of pocket spending," he said. However, what is interesting is the fact that the NC grabbed headlines during the poll campaigns earlier by raking up autonomy demands. Its vice president even went ahead by saying that the party will restore the post of the Prime Minister in Jammu and Kashmir if NC comes to power. Akbar Lone, another NC leader who won from north Kashmir raised pro- Pakistan slogans in open during his public rallies and even assured militants during one of his speeches that he is going to represent their cause in the parliament. However, as mere a week has passed since the declaration of the results, NC has shifted from good autonomy to good health. "These are the real issues perturbing people the most. We have to address them and if we have said that health is going to be our priority there is nothing wrong in it. As far as the slogans of the poll campaigning are concerned, those are the long pending demands of the party and we are sure that we will raise them up again once there are assembly polls round the corner," says NC leader. Meanwhile, the tectonic shift in NC's stand merely a week after winning the polls is perhaps symbolic of what politics is all about. Sooner the people understand it, better it is. |
