Kashmir is not state; it's its tiny part | India, Israel and territorial integrity | | Early Times Report Jammu, June 14: The supporters and sympathizers of people of Kashmir, barring internally-displaced Kashmiri Hindus, and Palestinians are critical of the attitude of India towards Kashmir and Kashmiri people and attitude of Israel towards Palestinians. They are seeing "two other broad similarities of purpose". Reflecting on these two similarities of purpose, they have said: "First, no party in Israel will allow any part of the occupied territories to secure full independent sovereignty. They must keep overall control over the land. The status of Jammu and Kashmir is totally different from Palestine in international law but the parallel with Israeli policy is that no party in India will contemplate full respect for the autonomy of Jammu and Kashmir, as was originally envisaged at the time of its accession, or even accord the people of the state the same respect for their human rights as people elsewhere in India expect under the constitution". They have also said: "For both the Israeli and Indian political classes, 'land is more important than the people'. Brutality over a deeply alienated people will reign. While Israel can offer varying degrees of autonomy - always retractable - in place of the international law obligation to end its illegal occupation of Palestinian territory and even contemplate annexation of larger and larger swathes of this land, the BJP will seek to bring Jammu and Kashmir at par with other states of the Union". Jammu and Kashmir is not Palestine where all are one against Israel. Jammu and Kashmir State consists of three distinct historical, geographical, ethnic, cultural regions. It consists of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. Kashmir is just a tiny part (15%) and Jammu and Ladakh the state's two bigger provinces constituting 85% land area. But more than that, politics in Jammu and Ladakh is different from that of Kashmir. The 2019 Lok Sabha poll results established that. It would be suicidal to ignore this stark reality and impose on the entire state a solution that is based on what Kashmir vouches for. Jammu and Kashmir have to be dealt separately taking into consideration its socio-economic and political aspirations. The other point that needs to be recognized is that the nation cannot be divided just for the reason that a group of people in a particular region profess a different faith. India has already witnessed two partitions, one in 1947 and the other in 1948. The third partition of India would mean its total balkanization. |
