Cops in civvies to help shopkeepers resume business in Kashmir
10/3/2019 11:04:07 PM

Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Oct 3: The Jammu and Kashmir Administration is working on a plan to boost confidence of the shopkeepers in hartal-bound Kashmir for resuming business activities by deploying cops in civvies in central business district of Lal Chowk.
Sources said the traders have told the administration that the fear of arson and stone pelting has been preventing shopkeepers in market places like Lal Chowk, Regal Chowk, Hari Singh High Street and Batmaloo in particular to resume business for the past around two months since the abrogation of Article 370 on Aug 5, 2019.
Sources said that the administration had approached the shopkeepers asking them to resume normal life adding that the government was willing to provide all requisite support in this regard.
Sources said that the trader community told the official machinery that given incidents of attack on shopkeepers including killing one of them, it was difficult for them to resume business unless sense of security is ensured. It was reliably learnt that the administration held detailed deliberations in this regard and finally decided to come up with the plan of deploying cops in civvies to keep vigil.
Sources said that apart from the routine deployment of paramilitary CRPF in the market places, the Jammu and Kashmir police would deploy special companies of cops in civvies. Such cops will not only keep vigil but overpower any miscreant who attempts to harass the traders. Sources said the plan would be executed after consultations with the stakeholders. A trader told Early Times that his community was willing to resume business if the administration was willing to give assurance of their safety. When contacted a senior official pleading anonymity said that deliberations were underway to persuade traders to resume business especially in the central business district.
"When Lal Chowk opens, all markets will open... we will take care of security. Things will be normal within days," he hoped.
