Electricity craved Kashmir lacks infrastructure for augmentation of power supply | | | Ishtiyaq Ahmad Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Nov 6: Kashmir is unlikely to witness any improvement in power supply during this winter as the valley lacks the required electricity infrastructure for augmentation of power supply. The electricity scenario deteriorates in Kashmir during the winter months when the power demand reaches over 2000 MWs against the availability of 1200 MWs. However, there won't be any improvement in power supply in the coming winter. "We provide 1200 MWs of electricity to consumers in Kashmir and the demand during winter months reaches to 2000 MWs. Like the previous years, there won't be any improvement in the power supply," a senior official of the Power Development Department, said. For the last few years, Centre has been allotting additional electricity to Jammu and Kashmir to overcome power crisis during winter months. The government of India last year allotted allocation of additional power of over 700 MWs for Jammu and Kashmir in view of higher demand in winters. "Additional allocation of power will end power crisis only when required infrastructure is in place. Even if the Centre allocates more power this time also, but we don't have required infrastructure to handle it. There will be improvement in power supply only when works on several grid stations will be completed," the official said. There are several uncompleted grid stations over which works have been started years ago. One such project is Alastang grid station, on which work was started nine-years-ago for transmission of electricity to Ganderbal district. Similarly, the construction of grid station at Ahmedpora Magam is yet to be completed. Completion of other grid stations at Lassipora Pulwama, Chrar-i-Sharif, Delina in north Kashmir is also facing delay due to lack of funds. The official said that there is an immense load on Pampore and Zainakote power grids from where electricity is being supplied to Srinagar, Ganderbal, and Pulwama districts. "The Ganderbal gets electricity from Zainakote grid station and remains overloaded," the official said. Chief Engineer, Power Development Department Kashmir, Qazi Hashmat admitted that Kashmir lacks the required electricity infrastructure. |
