Political leaders to remain incarcerated for time being, not to be released soon | Broadband services, SMS to start in phased manner in Kashmir | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Nov 6: The resumption of broadband services in Kashmir valley is likely to take place over the next few days, but in a phased manner. This would be done along with the resumption of short messaging services (SMS) on all the post paid mobile phones operational in the valley. Early Times has learnt from sources that the union government has decided not to release the leaders of different political parties in the near future. This means that these leaders belonging to the various mainstream political parties would have to spend some more time in incarceration in the jails as well as subsidiary jails. "The review security meeting convened by Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Tuesday took many decisions with respect to the overall law & order situation in the Kashmir valley. These decisions related to a host of issues that have come up on the security and law & order fronts in the Kashmir valley," said sources. This was the first such meeting after the state of Jammu & Kashmir got bifurcated into two union territories Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh on October 31, 2019. Some of the senior functionaries of the Home Ministry were present in the meeting and the Home Minister was given a brief about the emerging security scenario in the two union territories especially Kashmir valley. "During the meeting a decision was taken about the resumption of broadband services in the Kashmir valley. It was decided that broadband services would be resumed along with the SMS in the next few days. The resumption of broadband services would be done in phased manner," said sources. Sources said that it was decided that SMS would be started first and this would be followed simultaneously with resumption of broadband services, but case by case. They said that in the first instance the broadband services would be started for the welfare of students, businessmen and journalists. The service would also be started for the government offices and industrial houses operating in the valley. It would be in place to mention here that broadband services and the mobile services were snapped across Kashmir valley on August 5. While the post-paid mobile phone services got restarted on October 14, the SMS facility was withdrawn on all the platforms only few hours later. The pre-paid mobile phone services continue to be snapped across all the platforms. "During the review meeting it was decided that political leaders would have to spend some more time in incarceration and they would not be released soon. It was decided that wait and watch policy would be adopted on this issue and the decision about the release of these leaders would be taken at an appropriate time," said sources. Political leaders like Dr. Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti along with many others are under arrest ever since Articles 370 and 35-A were abrogated. While Omar and Mehbooba were chief ministers and MPs in the past, Dr. Abdullah has been three time chief minister, former union minister and current Member of Parliament from Srinagar Lok Sabha seat. |
