Since Mufti's red signal to Tawi artificial lake project, completion still eludes | Jammu region fails to get due attention from Govt | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 9: The prestigious developmental project for the Jammu city, the artificial lake over river Tawi, has been eluding its completion date, since a red signal was raised by the then Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed over the technical and financial viability of the project in year 2015. In the last over four years, the Jammu has repeatedly been ignored by successive governments and the failure to complete such prestigious projects, speaks clearly about the attention paid to Jammu region. Under Accelerated Irrigation Benefits Programme (AIBP) the Union government had sanctioned the artificial lake project in the year 2010 to the tune of Rs. 50 Crores. The Irrigation and flood Control department was the executing agency, which was to complete the project in July 2012 with the revised estimated cost of Rs. 70 Crores. The completion deadline was first time extended to July 2013 and then many times but in May 2015, the then Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed had announced the project was not technically and financially viable. Since then, no completion deadline has been finalized by the Irrigation and Flood Control department, which is yet to complete the remaining work as over 80 percent work has already been completed. Sources in the department informed that the department had sought proposal from the IIT Jammu for completion of the pending works. "After completion of the survey, the team of IIT had submitted the proposal as the contractors were not agreed to complete the project on the previous rates and they were demanding for review of the cost", sources said, adding that the team had submitted the proposal but department was yet to invite tenders for the remaining works. "On October 31, the Chief Engineer of Irrigation and Flood Control department Vinod Gupta had retired from the department since then the department has been running headless and no headway has been made in the direction", sources said, adding that though the Superintendent Engineer was looking after the affairs but it was still unclear as whether the tenders would be floated or not and how much time it would take to complete the project. "From the developmental scenario of Jammu region, it is amply clear that several projects in Jammu region have been ignored by government due to reasons best known to them", sources said. |
