Amid Dulat-Farooq talks, NC resumes political activities | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Mar 3: With former spymaster AS Dulat having held talks with jailed former Chief Minister and National Conference patron Dr Farooq Abdullah, the NC has resumed political activities in the summer capital of Srinagar setting the rumor mills rife of the party having softened its stand. After holding a series of events at the Nawa-e-Subh, the headquarter of the NC in Srinagar in the last seven months since the special status of Jammu and Kashmir was revoked, the party has now started its political activities outside the four walls of the office at Zero Bridge here. Recently the NC held a party convention in Hazratbal locality of Srinagar on February 27. Sources said the party decided to hold the event after consultations at the headquarter, where it was resolved that such events be held across Kashmir. This particular event was held by the Women’s wing functionaries and the Youth National Conference. The event was chaired with party’s district president Pir Afaq in chair. Addressing the event the NC leaders kept their speeches “apolitical” and mainly spoke about urban issues as faced by Srinagar. The leaders said the city has been turned into “urban chaos.” Observers are looking at the resumption of the political activities in the backdrop of NC patron Dr Abdullah having held “secret talks” with Dulat. Dulat, a close friend of Abdullah, who is also a Member Parliament from Srinagar is understood to have held detailed deliberations with the former RAW chief on February 12 at the former CM’s Gupkar residence which has been converted into a subsidiary jail. Observers believe that Dulat’s visit may have raised hopes in the NC leadership about the “situation improving in the coming times and thus they have started getting visible on the ground.” In 1999, the then Bharatiya Janta Party led government had sent Dulat to Kashmir to hold talks with Farooq who was the then Chief Minister to release Azhar Masood in exchange for passengers of hijacked Indian Airlines plane IC-814. In his book, Dulat had written about his close bonding with the Abdullah. Despite repeated attempts the NC leaders were not available for comments. |
