Delay in completion of projects hampers essence of development, Munish tells admin | Traders annoyed over slow pace of restoration work on dug up drain in Nai Basti | | RAJESH TANDON EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Mar 14: Editor in Chief, Early Times, Munish Gupta, on Saturday slammed the authorities for their lackadaisical approach towards execution of developmental projects being taken up in different parts of Jammu city; in particular, restoration work on a dug up drain in Nai Basti area which is lingering on for the last three months. Munish, who would be contesting the forthcoming assembly elections as an independent candidate from Gandhi Nagar constituency, said, “Isn’t it ironical that developmental projects like laying of slab over a drain in Nai Basti actually envisaged to provide benefits to the people instead of giving relief is taking a heavy toll on the locals as the execution of work is getting delayed. The slow pace of work hampers essence of development.” He said that general public particularly traders of Nai Basti area are in the midst of a mess created by the Municipal authorities as the old slab was dismantled for upgradation purpose but uprooted portion is yet to get restored to its actual position for over three months now thereby causing inconveniences to the commoners. Munish said, “Leaving the job half completed is proof enough that the executing agencies take up the projects with a halfhearted approach and their failure to complete the works well within stipulated timeframe shows their inefficiency. The officials need to ensure close monitoring of the developmental projects so as to avoid any derailment in final execution.” Meanwhile, several traders of Nai Basti while talking to Early Times said that they are cursing the day when the Municipal body dismantled the concrete covering of the drain in front of their shops. ““The drain in front of our shops was dug out about three months back to carry out some upgradation activity but till date the cover on the drain is yet to be re-laid. The pace of work is slow as the contractor entrusted with the job is executing it after breaks. More than 30 shops have been affected by the non-completion of the work. The drain lying uncovered here is creating a mess as the stink emanating from it due to blockade has made our lives miserable.” BABU RAM SHARMA “The entire area is covered with heaps of garbage due to accumulation of refuse and discarded material in the uncovered drain. The dug up drain alongside the highway is posing a grave threat not only to our customers but also to shopkeepers of the area as well as the pedestrians. The situation is really pathetic in such a populated market and it is even more dangerous when the threat of coronavirus is lurking everywhere. Ajit Kumar “While the shopkeepers are already suffering due to the negligence of the contractor and administration, the concerned authorities are hell bent upon coercing us as they every now and then turn up to penalize us for the garbage dumps lying near the drain. They blame us for the trash and unnecessarily impose fine on us even as we are not at fault as the collection of rubbish is mainly due to digging of drain. Amit Manhas “The customers are hesitant to visit our shops as the open drain full of sludge and garbage presents an unhygienic scene and people view it as an open invitation to diseases especially when the coronavirus threat has already created a panic among the people. Our business has got a severe beating due to the irresponsible officers and contractor. We made repeated requests to the concerned authorities to cover the drain with concrete slab but instead of completing the already delayed work they intimidate us by imposing harsh penalties without any valid reason. Sunil Kumar “The attitude of Municipal officials towards the problem we are facing due to digging of drain is not only apathetic but dictatorial as whenever any media house highlight the pitiable situation of our market they just don’t digest the reality and come up with all sorts of penalties. Is talking to a press reporter and expressing our concerns a crime? If not media then where should we project our grievances? We have no other alternatives when authorities refuse to listen to our plight. Mohan Lal Sharma |
