Amid Coronavirus threat, Munish asks officials to address poor sanitary conditions at Deep Nagar | Unattended garbage dumps become breeding ground for insects, residents worried | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Mar 21: Editor-in-chief Early Times, Munish Gupta, on Saturday urged the authorities to address poor sanitary conditions at Deep Nagar locality in Kunjwani area. Munish, who would be contesting the forthcoming assembly elections as an independent candidate from Gandhi Nagar constituency, said, “At a time when the entire world is on high alert due to the Coronavirus outbreak and many people are suffering from various other ailments, poor sanitary conditions continue to plague Deep Nagar locality in Kunjwani area.” Munish said, “People at the helm cannot act as mute spectators and their job doesn’t end at just issuing advisories asking residents to maintain proper cleanliness to keep diseases at bay. Men and machinery needs to be activated to keep all the areas in Jammu City clean.” Meanwhile, residents of Deep Nagar, while talking to Early Times said that heaps of garbage at various places belie the tall claims of Municipal authorities that garbage is being lifted from the localities daily to keep the area clean. There are several spots in Deep Nagar locality where collection of garbage is a common sight, making it a breeding ground for mosquitoes, flies and other insects. “These sites where garbage dumps are lying unattended particularly some spots near a nallah in the locality have become an eyesore for everyone as they stink badly. The inhabitants residing nearby and shopkeepers are forced to bear the brunt of unhygienic conditions due to non-lifting of the garbage,” said a resident, Kamaljeet. “Foul smell emanating from heaps of garbage has made our life miserable. Waste and garbage of the area is collected along the road near the nallah and it lies unattended for days together. The Municipal authority has failed to deal with this issue despite being approached on several occasions,” she added. She further said that unhygienic conditions near the houses are proving a health hazard for inhabitants especially for old age people and children particularly when the danger of coronavirus is lurking in the city. A group of Deep Nagar residents said though the Municipal authorities claim to collect garbage from door to door everyday, the ground reality is far from it. The garbage is collected after long intervals adding that the situation gets worse when stray cattle start squatting on it. The authorities have failed to resolve the issue of stray cattle. “The Municipal authority should make arrangements for collecting garbage at any other point and pick it up on regular basis to prevent spread of diseases. It is more than a necessity in the present times as the threat of coronavirus pandemic is knocking at our doors,” said some residents of the locality. The inhabitants further said that small drains in their area regularly remain choked adding that during a heavy spell of rain, blocked drains add to the woes of residents with water spilling onto the roads and sometimes into their houses. |
