Munish urges admn to address issues of Shergarh in time bound manner | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Apr 23: Editor, Early Times, Munish Gupta, on Thursday castigated the authorities for failing to provide basic civic amenities to the residents of Shergarh village and for not taking steps to get the garbage cleared from a canal in the area even as the people are under constant threat of deadly coronavirus pandemic. Munish, who would be contesting the forthcoming Assembly elections as an independent candidate from Gandhi Nagar constituency, said, “The worst condition of village Shergarh under panchayat Dharap in Satwari Block is an eye opener as it gives a fair amount of idea that if an area bordering capital city limits is in such a pathetic state then what will be the condition of other panchayats located in far-off areas.” “Once again facts belie the tall claims of the administration. Shergarh residents are craving for better roads and proper sanitation but there is nobody to listen to their woes. They are being ignored despite being living close to Jammu city,” he added. Referring to the dilapidated condition of the canal in Shergarh, Munish said that administrative apathy is largely responsible for its present condition. “The canal is considered to be a lifeline for the local residents but it is dying a slow death. The canal is almost on the verge of extinction as it is severely polluted due to accumulation of garbage and failure of the authorities to go for desilting on regular basis. It is shocking to know that the garbage which has been accumulated on the bed of canal was never cleared with sincere efforts.” The Editor Early Times urged the administration to direct its official machinery to ensure that problems and issues being faced by the people are addressed in a time bound manner and initiate the process of desilting the canal on priority. Meanwhile, residents of Shergarh while talking to Early Times highlighted the problems of poor drainage system, unplanned development and insanitation besides dilapidated condition of interior roads in the village. “The drains in our village can easily be called as mini-gutters as they are choked with filth. The blocked drains are breeding ground for insects like flies and mosquitoes who hover around in our houses due to which an epidemic could break anytime in the area,” the residents said. “Drainage system in the area has not been upgraded even as a large number of homes were built over the years. The filthy water from drains gets spilled all around due to their blockage,” they added. Few locals also raised the dilapidated condition of roads in the village which according to them are in terrible state for the last several years. “Pot-holed and uprooted roads have made our lives miserable but the authorities never pay any attention to improve their condition. We made several requests for upgrading the roads but nobody paid any heed to our pleas,” said the residents. While a large number of locals said that they are facing several problems due to inordinate delay in desliting of canal in their area. “We are daily confronting foul smell, pollution and dangers of outbreak of an epidemic which has increased manifold with the rapid spread of coronavirus,” the locals said. The inhabitants of the area said that the heaps of garbage is lying on the bed of canal while the waste also gets stuck beneath foot bridges that pose a serious threat to the health of nearby residents. “The real condition of the canal can be seen anywhere in the area. It’s really pathetic. The Irrigation and Flood Control Department seems to be unconcerned toward the situation as it is not making concerted efforts to cleanse the canal in a proper manner. Every year they (department) just give cosmetic touch in the name of desilting, thereby befooling people,” said a resident. “We demand that the Department should release the water in the canal only after completely removing the silt and garbage from it. Most of the canal area has not even been touched by the department for the last so many years due to which the silt and piles of garbage are still lying in it. An extensive exercise has to be taken up for clearing silt from the canal,” he added. |
