Jammuites feel heat of rising mercury but unable to switch on ACs
Mechanics not allowed by admin for routine services of electrical appliances

EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, Apr 23: Though the Chandigarh Administration has given a go ahead to its residents to avail services of air conditioning mechanics, plumbers and electricians in the city, the Jammu & Kashmir government has not allowed its citizens to take advantage of such facilities despite having a Union Territory status.
The rising mercury level in Jammu region has made Jammuites to feel the effect of heat but getting a respite from hot weather condition it seems is almost impossible as they cannot switch on their air conditioners due to failure to get their appliances serviced by the mechanics before the onset of summers as the movement of technicians has been restricted during the lockdown.
The mercury has started hovering around 35 degrees in Jammu city in the last few days and for the upcoming days it will continue to rise.
“The rising temperature has been compelling the residents to switch on their electrical appliances to beat the heat. A majority of Jammu city residents have been using the Air-conditioners during the summers but these electrical appliances require regular service, which could only be done by a mechanic and not by any ordinary person,” said a local.
“We fail to understand that when Union Territory of Chandigarh can allow the movement of air conditioning mechanics, plumbers and electricians despite being declared as COVID-19 hotspot then why such order can’t be implemented in UT of J&K. As per my knowledge same set of laws, rules and orders are applied to every Union Territory. Why then there is ambiguity in case of J&K?,” he added.
He said that usually during the early days of summer particularly in the month of April, people used to get their Air conditioners serviced but this season due to shutdown in view of the COVID-19 restrictions, a good number of people have not been able to get their ACs serviced.
“I want to get my AC serviced but the AC mechanic, who used to do it has refused to visit our locality in view of restrictions imposed by government. He is telling that the district administration has not issued us pass and the police personnel didn’t allow them to visit various areas”, a local of Bhatindi said.
The locals also said that apart from ACs, other electrical appliances such as refrigerators, desert coolers, fans also need repairs these days. “During winters there is no need of these appliances and even some went kaput, people leave it for repairs in the beginning of next summer season. But this season, the mechanics as well as electricians have not been allowed to visit various localities, creating unnecessary hurdles for the people”, another local said.
A senior citizen of Jammu said that the district administration should evolve a mechanism, allowing AC mechanics, electricians to visit the localities on the call of the customers, so that public would not suffer on account of rising temperature.
Pertinently, the Union Territory Administration of Chandigarh has compiled a list of 75 electricians, plumbers and AC mechanics for utility of their services across the city. The step was taken to deal with the problems being faced by the residents of Chandigarh UT, which has divided into six zones and in each zone the electricians, plumbers and AC mechanics have been authorized to complaint from the residents. Moreover the technicians have been instructed to use face masks, hand sanitiser and gloves while attending complaints and adhere to social distancing. It is a paid service and the charges are to be settled mutually by the customer and the technician.
Deputy Commissioner Jammu didn’t pick up her phone, nor replied to the message forwarded on Whattsapp. Assistant Deputy Commissioner Jammu also didn’t pick up his phone.
