Water problem may increase in Jammu & Kashmir | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, May 27: The farmers suffering the epidemic corona and lockdown have suffered another setback. The Punjab government has stopped the water of Kathua Canal and Ravi-Tavi Canal without giving prior notice to the Jammu and Kashmir administration. Due to this, farmers who have planted and prepared paddy are in trouble. It is estimated that the paddy cultivation in 15,000 hectares of land in Kathua district will be affected. The Jammu and Kashmir Irrigation Department understood the matter when the water in the canals suddenly dried up. On the other hand, the Jammu and Kashmir administration is now preparing to take up the matter with the Punjab government. According to the order of the Principal Secretary, Water Management Department, Government of Punjab, the supply of water will be closed due to the repair of the gates in Madhopur Head Works for 10 days from 24 May to 2 June. This order has been issued citing Rule 63 of the North India Canal and Drainage Act 1987. On May 24, in Madhopur barrage towards Punjab, where the supply of water has been stopped from Ranjit Sagar Dam. Due to this the supply of Kathua Canal and Ravi-Tavi Canal is also not being done. The Punjab government has decided to shut down from May 24 to June 2 due to the repair work at Madhopur Barrage. There is no alternative system available for this. Farmers currently need water for irrigation. The matter has been brought to the notice of higher officials. |
