Online classes in Jammu confined to sending Home-work through Whattsapp, say parents | ‘No mechanism for students to interact with teachers, entertain their queries or evaluate home-work’ | | Early Times Report
Jammu, May 27: Tall claims of private schools to provide online education to students are nothing more than prescribing “home-work” to them through Whattsapp messages. Parents told Early Times that “there is no mechanism for students to interact with the teachers. There is no one whom they can approach to get their queries answered. The progress of the home work done by the students is also not being evaluated by the schools due to technical hurdles as well as work load.” “The teachers are clicking the photographs of the chapters as well as queries either jotted down on paper or on the book page and same photographs have been forwarded to the students through Whattsapp messages,” they added. The parents said that there is no interaction between the students and the teachers. “Due to low speed of internet the interaction is not possible in most of the cases as the video-conferencing chat applications don’t work smoothly,” they added. A teacher working in private school said due to low speed internet, interaction between a student and teachers becomes difficult. “Suppose to send home work of one subject, a teacher has to send three to four photographs through Whattsapp. For five subjects, a student will at-least get 10-15 pages daily. If there are 40 students in a class and every student would send back the photographs after completing the work in his notebooks, then a teacher would have to evaluate around 400 pages, which is not possible”, the teacher said. The teachers said that “it’s merely a one way communication and the schools have only been trying to keep contact with the students, so that they would not forget the studies altogether. A teacher can reply the query of one or two students on Whattsapp but if all the students start sending queries through Whattsapp, it would not be possible for a teacher to reply so many queries”, the teacher said. Parents said, “During offline school days, the students used to get less home work but now the home work is leghty it takes several hours to complete it,” a parent said. “If only sending home-work is the online classes, then what’s the purpose of these online classes. It appears to be an initiative to collect fee from the students and to send a message to the administration that they are doing something but in actual sense it is almost a futile exercise”, the parents said. |
