Discrimination continues: Now ill-equipped Jammu dependant on Kashmir for Covid-19 testing! | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, May 27: Despite the abrogation of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir, the winter capital region continues to be neglected even in tackling the deadly Covid-19 virus. As compared to Srinagar, the government preparedness in Jammu has been so pathetic that the City of Temples doesn’t even have adequate resources to conduct tests of the Covid-19 suspect cases. Whereas in Kashmir, the government run hospitals perform over 2000 tests for Covid-19 per day, in Jammu the facilities are so poor that out of the total samples collected in Jammu around 500 are to sent to the valley for testing. Sources in the Health Department told Early Times that some of the samples collected in Jammu are being sent on daily basis to government laboratories in Kashmir for testing as the valley has “better testing facilities as compared to Jammu.” The sources said while in Jammu the tests are performed mainly at the Government Medical College Jammu, in Srinagar alone such tests are performed at atleast three government run facilities. Sources said the lack of adequate facilities at Jammu hospitals has become a major hindrance in properly tackling Covid-19 cases. “Sending samples for tests to Kashmir means a considerable delay in the tests reports and this is affecting the entire system of Covid-19 management in Jammu. This is really unfortunate that Jammu continues to face discrimination even in the testing facilities that government has shifted entire focus on Kashmir,” said a doctor working at the Government Medical College Jammu on the condition of anonymity. The doctor said whereas the people of Jammu have shown the way in tackling the Covid-19 through strict adherence of the laid down norms including lockdown and social distancing, the province continues to be “victim of regional discrimination.” “At at time when Jammu should get more incentives for having lesser number of positive cases as compared to Kashmir, the administration has deprived the Jammuites even of the adequate infrastructure to tackle the pandemic,” said the doctor. Despite repeated attempts the concerned in Jammu could not be contacted for comments. But a senior official in the administration in Kashmir dealing with Covid-19 confirmed that they were receiving “samples for testing from Jammu.” |
