5/28/2020 12:25:31 AM

EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, May 27: Demanding appointment of commission to probe financial irregularities in the erstwhile state of Jammu & Kashmir, the senior BJP leader and former union minister Prof Chaman Lal Gupta said that it should be looked into as to why revenue resources of J&K got disappeared and such bad situation has developed. Prof Gupta said that over the years the erstwhile state become the consumer State despite massive funding from the centre. He said that during the period of J&K’s special status almost all the sources of state revenue got disappeared, adding that its resultant effect on J&K was that it became dependent at the center to the extent that from its own internal resources the erstwhile state could not manage the salaries of its staff.
The revenue of the State from its internal resources was hardly Rs two thousand crores whereas the Pay Bill of the State Staff had touched about Rs 3500 crores, said Prof Gupta.
Prof Gupta said according to an estimate that over the seven decades of Article 370 the center provided funds to J&K for its developmental activities to the tune of about Rs ten lakh crores but with what results; instead of attaining self-sufficiency in any sphere of life, the J&K has come to be a consumer State to the extent that even the poultry including eggs and chickens were imported to meet the requirements of the State. Prof Gupta regretted that industrial units of Maharaja’s time have not only been mysteriously closed down but little care was taken that of the costly machinery of these industrial units and other costly lands and buildings including that of Resin Factory of Miran Sahib, Willow factory of Miran Sahib, Kalakot Thermal Power Plant, Joinery Mill of Bari Brahamana and also silk factory of Jammu.
He impressed upon the administration of UT to salvage the costly properties and machinery of the units which have been closed down and other Government Properties in and outside J&K which are in a sorry state of affairs.
