Divisive politics won’t work
6/24/2020 11:36:11 PM
Silent approval of the people to end 150-year old Darbar Move Practice seems to have not gone well with the National Conference, which stands pushed to the wall after J&K’s reorganization on August 5, 2019.
The recent statements issued by the NC indicate that it wants to convey to the people that the decision of the LG’s administration to keep both the secretariats functional in Jammu as well as Srinagar is an anti-Kashmir decision.
The National Conference, which used to claim that it’s the only party that can rule J&K, stands issueless since the abrogation of J&K’s special status and its subsequent bifurcation into two Union Territories.
It appears that the J&K administration taking a step towards ending the Darbar Move practice has suddenly activated the NC. It wants some issue to cling on to. But the party should realize that demand to abolish the Darbar Move practice has been pending for a long time.
When Omar Abdullah was the J&K Chief Minister, he had tried to clear the decks to end Darbar Move but the NC veterans did not allow him to go ahead on the pretext that this step will annoy the people in both Jammu and Kashmir regions. Ultimately, he shelved the idea.
Many people in Jammu as well as in Kashmir believe that politicians did not revoke the Darbar Move practice during all these years as it entitled them to have all the facilities in Jammu as well as Srinagar. They used to spend summer months in Srinagar and winter in Jammu. They had started believing that they too are monarchs and are entitled to all the privileges.
National Conference needs to bear in mind that times have changed and it cannot pit one region against another. Masses have matured politically and they know the difference between good and bad. Every year crores were spent on shifting the official records from Srinagar to Jammu and vice-versa. The money which was spent on it was tax payers money. It was nothing more than a wasteful expenditure. It has been established without doubt that shifting of secretariats was a futile exercise in the era of internet as technology can be used to connect both the seats of power.
The National Conference should forget about Darbar Move and the departments which have been asked to operate from Srinagar and Jammu. It should concentrate on its future, which looks dark and gloomy. Resorting to divisive politics won’t work.
