Kargil, July 24: Life was on Friday paralysed in Kargil in Union Territory (UT) of Ladakh due to strike called by student unions in support of their demands, including declaring results of District Service Selection Recruitment Board (DSSR) and allowing youth of the UT to appear in Jammu and Kashmir Bank (JKB) recruitment examination. The strike call, given by All India Kargil Ladakh Student Union, was supported by different political and religious parties of the UT. Meanwhile, All India Kargil Ladakh Student Union, Jammu, hailing from district Kargil, has also called for a strike call on Friday in support of the demands of unemployed youth of the region. Shops and business establishments remained closed and traffic was off the roads in Kargil and other major towns and tehsil headquarters. Work in government offices was also affected. A student leader said on Friday a total strike was being observed in Kargil. He said strike call was supported by the leaders of different political parties and religious organizations. He said the DSSR has failed to declare the results for different posts though interview has been held last year. “We cannot apply for different vacant posts in JKB,” he said, adding that either the examination for recruitment in the bank should be postponed till they are made eligibility or some share is reserved for youth of Ladakh. He said as per present rules, youth from Ladakh are not eligible to apply in the JKB as domicile rules have not yet been framed. “Why should the youth from Ladakh suffer if the domicile rules are not framed,” he said. District Kargil president of the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) Mohammad Ali Majaz has also expressed full support to strike called by students. He said the issues raised by the students are genuine and government should resolve them immediately. In a statement, Majaz said the BJP youth wing has also raised these issues and will extend all support to student community. He has appealed to BJP workers and people of Kargil to support the strike. The District Congress Committee, Kargil has also extended full support to strike. Imam Khomani Trust, Anjuman-e-Sofia Noorbakshia Kargil, the Kargil unit of the Ladakh Buddhist Association have also extended full support to strike saying issues raised by students are genuine and reasonable. Meanwhile, Feroz Ahmad Khan, chairman, chief executive councilor of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Kargil, has also expressed concern over non-inclusion of youths of Ladakh in JKB recruitment drive. He question why the bank recruitments have been limited only to domicile of J&K UT only when people of Ladakh have equally contributed to development of the bank for decades. He said he has written to Advisor to Governor UT Ladakh Umang Narula and chairman of JKB.
