PM’s no statehood hint puts Omar Abdullah in trouble | It’s to be or not to be for NC now! | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Aug 16: It is official now. Jammu and Kashmir wouldn't be given statehood back anytime soon as Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his independence speech from the ramparts of the red fort has clarified that polls in the erstwhile state will be held soon after the delimitation process. There was no mention of statehood restoration. “The statement of the Prime Minister has put to rest all the speculations about the restoration of statehood as was widely being projected by the mainstream political leaders of Jammu and Kashmir,” says a leading columnist from Kashmir. He added that the statement of the Prime Minister has put the entire National Conference clan in a tight spot as the vice president and the former chief minister Omar Abdullah in his recent interviews stated that he will not be contesting polls if the statehood is not restored. “It means we will see no Abdullahs contesting the polls. This is going to be an extremely interesting situation to watch,” he said. Prior to this, Jammu and Kashmir’s Chief Secretary had hinted that the erstwhile state will continue to remain a union territory till things do not witness an overall betterment. “Three stages of transition have been going on in J&K. They transition from Jammu and Kashmir Constitution to Indian Constitution, bifurcation of the state and then transition from state to UT. There have been lots of changes. Separation of three lakh employees was done in just 15 days. The UT rules were made. We had to prepare a budget for five months from October 30 to March 31. Then again budget from April for the whole financial year. Division of assets and liabilities have not been finalized yet,” the CS was quoted by the reports as having said. He also added that taking Jammu and Kashmir back on track and feeling it from the menace of corruption will take time. “There was a terrible situation here. Things were designed for corruption. Mis-governance and corruption were for so long that the system has collapsed from inside. The whole state was a big ponzi scheme,” he said. Meanwhile, the statement of such an important nature has given enough hints that Jammu and Kashmir’s dispensation is in a complete reboot mode and that there are no proposals in hand at present for turning the recently declared UT again into a full-fledged state. |
