EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, Aug 25: It seems that the ‘Clean India’ campaign launched by the central government has no significance for the officials of Kishtwar Municipality as heaps of garbage is lying unattended at various places in Kishtwar town and its adjoining areas exposing their non-seriousness.
Sources told Early Times that ever since the launch of much hyped Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) couple of years ago, the district administration through various departments has spent crores of rupees to create awareness among the people across the district but seemingly, the authorities have forgotten the same as Kishtwar town and its peripheries areas are ‘decorated’ with heaps of garbage.
Moreover, several areas of Kishtwar town are facing acute sewerage problems as many localities are experiencing choked drains as well as underdeveloped lanes and by-lanes which depicts a poor image of the town.
“Garbage spills out on roads which causes a lot of inconvenience not only to the local inhabitants, but also to the commuters passing through these areas,” said sources.
“Even though lakhs of rupees have been spent by the Kishtwar Municipality in papers for awareness under SBM but nothing was done practically on ground other than distributing some dustbins among the people,” they added.
The inhabitants of Shaheedi Mohallah, Ward No. 7 of Kishtwar town are facing brunt of poor sewerage and drainage problem every day as the covered 8 inch Dia drain constructed by the Municipal Committee Kishtwar often gets chocked as a result of which the dirty sewerage water spills on roads emitting lot of foul smell, thus making the life of the local inhabitants as hell.
“We have only been given a tag of being a part of Municipality but our Panchayats in rural areas are far better than the existing Municipality of Kishtwar,” said the inhabitants.
The shopkeepers of Mini Bus Stand Kishtwar told Early Times that heaps of garbage remains unattended as a result of which the people living in this are including shopkeepers are suffering a lot. The inhabitants of Umar Mohallah and Baghwan Mohallah accused the NHPC of failing in building up the sewerage treatment and garbage treatment plant with in its limit at Semna colony.
The locals informed that majority of the sewerage water and garbage of NHPC colony spills into these areas thus making the lives of people living in these areas miserable.
The anguished people called for immediate attention of the District administration for addressing the problem of poor drainage and sewerage so that people could find healthy atmosphere, beside also action against the concerned officials who fail to keep the city clean by not performing their duties.
The people urged upon President MC Kishtwar Raiz Ahmed Zarger to look into the matter by taking effective measures to clean up the mess in the Kishtwar Municipality.
