Embarrassment for Cong after Pakistan hails party’s initiative on Kashmir

Early Times Report

Jammu, Aug 25: Congress landed in an embarrassing position after Pakistan supported the much touted “Gupkar Declaration”- of which the national party is also one of the signatories.
Although CPM is also signatory of the controversial ‘Declaration’, Congress likely to face anger of the people across the country after Pakistan jumped into the issue and hailed steps taken by the Kashmir centric parties.
Credible sources said Jammu based party leaders were already annoyed over the unilateral decision taken by Valley based leaders to become part of the ‘Gupkar Declaration’ but Pakistan supported the step Congress has landed in a very difficult situation. “Unilateral decision of the Kashmir based leaders would have proved disastrous for the party in other parts of the country”, a senior Congress member said on the condition of anonymity.
He said that already there was strong anger among the people of Jammu against the party's decision to support ‘Gupkar Declaration’.
Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi Monday said that there has been a rise in political resistance movement in J&K as the Kashmiri people struggle for their “inalienable right to self-determination”. Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Qureshi said the political parties in Kashmir rejected India’s August 5 move and forged an alliance to wage a joint struggle aimed at reviving the old status of the territory. He said, “This is not an ordinary occurrence but an important development as the joint statement issued by the political parties hold the signatures of Farooq Abdullah and enjoy the support of the Congress party which is the main opposition party in India”
Political parties including Congress had demanded rollback of August 5, 2019 decision which led to abrogation of Article 370 and bifurcation of erstwhile State of J&K into two union territories – Ladakh and J&K.
The demand was raised in a joint statement issued by National Conference (NC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Indian National Congress, Peoples Conference (PC), CPI (Marxist), and Awami National Conference (ANC).
