Teacher’s day: Commemoration to nation builders
8/28/2020 12:45:55 AM

Shyam sudan

There is a common saying that ‘Teaching is not everybody’s cup of tea”.No doubt it is crystal clear fact that everyone is not capable to teach and guide others as the teachers does in their life. That’s why teaching profession is considered as the supreme and noble one among other professions of the life. The role and contribution of an efficient teacher is always of super hierarchical level in the society. Like a skilful mason teachers plays their significant role in lying the strong foundation of a civilized and cultured society. Teaching is not merely a profession but a unique and incomparable mission for the civilization and mankind.
To give honour and tribute to teachers across the country every year a special day is celebrated on 5th of September every year. The day 5th of September has very historic importance for our country. Because on this day our beloved first vice president Dr. Saravpalli Radhakrishnan was born. He was an efficient educationist, philosopher, scholar and a great statesman of our country. He has practised teaching in his life at different reputed education institutions. He was the president(second) of republic India after independence. We celebrate teachers day on 5th September to give honour and tribute to this great scholar.Teachers day is celebrated in every education institutions of the country with great enthusiasm and zeal.
With the new structure of education and needs of the society the role of teachers are always changing as per the requirements. In past the place of teachers in society is very high and respectable. Perhaps gurus were the only medium and source of knowledge those days. In Gurukulus or Ashrams these learned scholars generally impart their knowledge to their disciples. Those days these learned scholars or gurus generally follow very strict rules and norms in such places of knowledge. Disciples were also very obedient and knowledge seekers in those days. But gradually with advancement in every field the role of those gurus suddenly receive a big change .Now teaching is considered a profession for material gain and a licence for one’s livilhood. With the blind race of academic competition and privatisation of education an abrupt transformation can be seen everywhere in all fields of life and mostly in teaching profession. With this sudden transformation in teaching learning process the role and status of teachers also got major shift in the society.
Teachers of modern digital era generally follow the dictum of ‘Jack of all trades and master of none”.No doubt in order to make an alignment with contemporary teaching process such kind of professional blend is the need of the hour. Now is the time for smart teaching and only those teachers could get the adjustability in a easy manner who frequently makes homeostasis with changing need of the society and their profession. Rote memory method and rudimentary preaching sessions are now outdated for new generation. An efficient and alert teacher knows this bitter reality of our society.
Now the relationship between a teacher and its students has different meaning and paradigm. Now the status of teacher changed from authoritarian to a facilitator and mediator.
On teacher day students generally play the role of their favourite teachers in a simulated class room situation to visualize and observe the life of their mentors. obviously teacher day is the only time for such kind of brainstorming and pondering over issues related with teaching profession. Lot of reasons responsible for degradation in teaching profession and status of teachers in present regime. Sources of knowledge are many and commercialisation of teaching is also there.Faulty recruitment policies, selection of incompetent human resource, selection of half learned professional and nepotism favouring policies are some of the reasons for degradation of this noble profession. Moreover mushrooming of professional coaching centres, private academies and other training institute has changed the entire scenario of teaching and status of a national builder .All the focuss now shifted from moral values and education to literary and academic excellence. The pious bonding of teacher and students are now getting changed with the changing needs of the society and with new challenges of teaching learning process. But still the place of teachers in one’s life is very supreme and unmatchable. A teacher not only trained his pupils with various learning skills but plays a role of a guide, mentor, facilitators and a true welwishers in his life.In the words of kabir,Without the guru no one obtains the spiritual knowledge or achieves salvation. It is aptly said that,Guru brahma, Guru Vishnu, Guru devo maheshwara....we should indebted to our gurus or teachers for their significant role in our life.We are what in our life, our all success and achievements depends upon the guidance and efforts of our teachers. No doubt God has given the power of wisdom in every creature. But for the refinement and exploration of those hidden traits in one’s vision or mind there is need of a guide or mentor. And our teachers are doing this job without any hatred, jealousy and personal interests. On this special day (teachers day) we must pay obesiance and respect to our teachers.A.P.J Abdul kalam has rightly said that,”If the country is to be corruption free and become a nation of beautiful minds.I strongly feel that there are three societal members who can make a difference. They are the father, the mother and the teacher.
