Extend olive branch

Early Times Report

Srinagar, Aug 27: Even as a senior National Conference leader from Budgam has openly announced rebellion against the party over its so called “stand on Kashmir”, the NC President and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has approached the rebel leader with an olive branch.
Sources said Omar recently held deliberations with the leader asking him not leave the party. Sources said another senior NC leader, who is also a close aide of Omar also held deliberations with the rebel leader.
Sources said the other senior leaders of the party had asked Omar and his aide to go for a dialogue with the rebel leader lest he quits the party.
Sources said Omar told the senior leader from Budgam that NC respects his viewpoint but that he shouldn’t go public on the issue and that issue would be resolved soon.
Sources said Omar had been assigned the task of reviving party relations with the Budgam leader.
Sources said NC had apprehensions that otherwise he could leave the party. “This party (NC) doesn’t want any of its leaders to leave lest NC goes the way PDP has gone. Thus our party is concerned to retain each and every person associated with the party,” said a senior leader on the condition of anonymity.
It was reliably learnt that Omar Abdullah looks ahead to hold a get-together with the said leader after some days and that some of the senior leaders of the party would also be invited to the event to resolve the issues with him. It’s pertinent to mention that the rebel leader has already distanced himself from being the spokesperson of the party and has made his decision public.
Sources said it was only after the leader went public over his alienation from being the speaker that Omar Abdullah personally intervened.
In the past, the said leader was among the close friends of Omar Abdullah.
Despite repeated attempts the two were not available for comments.
But a senior NC leader said that no one has rebelled. “Ours is a democratic party and everyone has the right to speak about the opinion he or she holds. There’s no sort of rebellion at all, we’re united” the NC leader said.
