NHRC seeks action against delinquent officials in Ramnagar infant death cases | Issues show cause notice to CS on compensation to the victims | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Sep 7: National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) taking serious cognizance of the complaint made by senior social activist Sukesh C Khajuria regarding the deaths of infants due to consumption of spurious drugs in Ramnagar area of Udhampur district in December-January 2019-2020 has reprimanded the J&K drug authorities. The NHRC issuing a show cause notices to the J&K government has also sought action taken report against “the delinquent officials, on account of whose negligence such incident had occurred, which could otherwise be averted due to their strict vigil”. Sukesh C Khajuria in his petition to the NHRC had sought adequate compensation for the victims and their families and action against the negligent officials. The NHRC in its order has issued show cause notices to the Chief Secretary of J&K returnable within a month, found the state to be “vicariously liable for said negligence” and asked the J&K government as to why the Commission should not recommend payment of compensation of Rs 3,00,000 to the NoK of each deceased in the present case, who died due to the consumption of adulterated oral syrup/medicine and whose human rights have been infringed upon. The NHRC observed that complainant Sukesh Khajuria had alleged about the deaths of a dozen infants/children due to consumption of a particular spurious cough syrup in Ramnagar Tehsil of Udhampur District of Jammu and Kashmir during month of Dec 2019 – January 2020. It is alleged that the incident happened due to negligence of the officials. The complainant has sought for intervention of the Commission for action against the delinquent govt officials and compensation to aggrieved families who have lost their children. The Commission vide its order dated 11.06.2020 had sought report from the Chief Secretary, Govt. of Jammu & Kashmir and the Secretary, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India.
