Jammu: Health authorities played petty politics during lockdown | Were caught napping when COVID-19 peaked in region | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 5: Union Government had imposed nearly two and half-month lockdown only to prepare health institutions across the country to fight the deadly virus in the coming days. Health institutions across the country upgraded infrastructure with equipping the same with advanced equipment but in Jammu region authorities at the helm of the affairs appeared to be only indulged into doing politics on this vital sector. As the health sector is completely collapsed in Jammu region, people are asking genuine questions, what authorities had done during the 75 days long lockdown? Authorities were very much aware that the Centre was going to send ventilators in all states and UTs after the lockdown to treat COVID patients but they never bothered to train staff to handle these ventilators. Instead of making some fresh recruitments and imparting training to the available staff, authorities in the Health Department were indulged into petty politics. It was all due to such casual and non-serious approach of the authorities that ventilators sanctioned by the Union Government under the PM-CARES Fund to the UT of J&K to combat Covid-19 have become mere ‘show-pieces’ in district hospitals of Jammu province due to non-availability of man-power. Although authorities are not ready to give details of the total number of ventilators sanctioned to J&K under this fund, in the district hospitals of far-flung areas like Poonch, Kishtwar and Reasi authorities could not properly utilize these ventilators due to staff shortage. During the visit of a central team of experts in the month of August, J&K administration had informed that to ‘combat’ this viral disease J&K has a total of 21664 isolation beds, 432 ICU beds, 454 ventilators and 5296 oxygen supported beds. It was also informed to the central team that some 342 ventilators were in transit and1630 oxygen outlets are to be installed in the next two months. It was also assured that establishment of more oxygen generating plants in 29 districts and associated hospitals were in pipeline for which Rs 150 crore have already been allocated by the UT government. |
