15-years on, govt buildings in Uri await completion | October 8, 2015 earthquake anniversary | | S Tahir-ul Haq Early Times Report Srinagar, Oct 8: Fifteen years have passed since the massive earthquake struck Kashmir on October 8, 2005 devouring hundreds of people in just a few minutes. The earthquake wreaked havoc in the border villages of Uri and Tanghdar in north Kashmir. The frontier areas were worst hit. Despite passing of fifteen years work on dozens of government buildings is yet to be completed. “It was on October 8, 2005, when the devastating temblor struck the Valley. It caused massive damage to life and property,” recalled Abdullah Khan of Uri. Khan said, “It looked like a doomsday as everyone was trying to save his life, some were seen crying, and others were rescuing their kith and kin from the debris.” Another local resident of Jhola Uri, Waseem Ahmad told Early Times that years have passed now, but there are dozens of government buildings that are still incomplete even after commencement of Back to Village programme. As the third phase of the Back to Village programme is on, locals in Uri have raised these issues with the visiting officers/officials.Locals said that many school building in sub division Uri that are still incomplete include BMS Uri, BPS Banjaran, MPS Mothal, BPS Upper dara, BPS Uri bala, BPS Sheikh mohalla Nambla, GPS Nambla Payeen A, GPS Dawaran, BPS Gaziabad, BMS Dawaran and BPS Bandi Garkote and other building in Jhoola educational zone.
