Sailing in two boats | | | Congress Party in Jammu and Kashmir is caught between the devil and the deep sea. Since the day District Development Council elections have been announced in the newly carved out J&K UT, the Congress party has been sailing in two boats. Few Kashmir centric leaders of the party are claiming that the Congress is a part of Peoples Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD), while a few others have been stating that the party is not a constituent of the PAGD. The Congress Party in J&K seems totally confused. It has entered into a seat sharing agreement for the DDC polls but in the same breath it’s refusing to acknowledge that it’s a part of the amalgam being headed by the National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah. The PAGD comprises of six Kashmir centric parties, including National Conference, Peoples Democratic Party, Peoples Conference, and other small political formations. The PAGD leaders are claiming that they have come together to get everything back and to fight for the restoration of the Article 370, which was abrogated by the Centre on August 5, 2019, is their main cause. However, the Congress Party has gauged the mood of the people across the country and is aware of the fact that the entire nation has lauded the GoI’s decision to merge J&K into the Union of India fully. The “grand old party” of the country seems in no position to go against the mood of the people in the country. If it joins the PAGD in J&K it would mean that the Congress party to is seeking the restoration of Article 370. Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, has already asked the Congress to make its stand clear vis-à-vis Article 370 and it joining hands with such parties in the Valley that are talking in the language of foreign powers. He has described PAGD as “Gupkar Gang” that has gone global but has warned that such unholy alliance won’t be tolerated as its projecting the cause of enemy countries. The Congress has been caught in a dicey situation if the party continues its bonhomie with the Kashmir centric parties it will cause aspersions on its nationalistic credentials. But if it stays away from the Gupkar alliance winning any seats in the forthcoming DDC polls will be a difficult task for it. After Amit Shah took a dig at the Congress party it disassociated itself from the PAGD and claimed that it’s not a part of the alliance. It appears that the party has felt the pinch. |
