Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Nov 27: At a time when the different stakeholders are putting best efforts to make the online classes successful some of the senior professors at the University of Kashmir are not ready to impart education through this medium to the students of varsity.
Early Times has learnt from sources that some of the senior professors of University of Kashmir’s Department of History are not taking online classes. This has resulted into a situation wherein the students are being denied quality education through the medium of technology.
“At least three senior professors of the Department of History have not been attending the online classes and they consider themselves as above all at the varsity campus. The other professors and lecturers are attending the online classes without any fail but these three professors are not ready to impart education to the students of the concerned department,” said sources.
Sources said that instead of imparting education through the online mode the three senior professors have told their students that they have uploaded some material and the same can be downloaded by the students. They said that since the internet speed is 2G in Jammu & Kashmir it is virtually impossible to download the material.
“The denial by these senior professors of the Department of History of taking the online classes has emboldened some other faculty members of other departments and they too are showing reluctance in imparting education through the online mode. At the end of the day the students are ultimate sufferers,” said sources.
Sources also said that the Department of History has come up as a perfect ‘rehabilitation centre’ for the relatives of some of the senior faculty members. They said that these faculty members have appointed their kith and kin in the department while the deserving ones are not given a chance to enter the department.
“A senior faculty member has appointed his son, daughter and nephew on different positions in the department on contractual basis. Not long back yet another senior faculty member had appointed his son, daughter and daughter in law on different positions in the department on contractual basis,” said sources.
Dean Academic Affairs, University of Kashmir, Professor Akbar Masood told Early Times that he would look into the issue of denial by some of the senior professors of the Department of History to impart education through online mode. He however denied that some senior faculty members have appointed their relatives in the Department of History.
“Let me tell you that we have a robust system in place with regard to appointments at the university. The same is done by a nominee of Vice Chancellor, concerned head of the department, Dean and senior most Professor of the concerned department. As such there is no scope for appointment of kith and kin of faculty members without adopting the formal procedure,” said Professor Akbar.
