Rules are for fools: Police sports festival defies Covid-19 protocols | | Vijay GarG | 1/1/2021 11:33:31 PM |
| Early Times Report jammu, Jan 1: A police sports festival that recently concluded in Kashmir has come under scanner for brazen violation of Covid-19 protocols as laid down by the Union Home Ministry, which controls the police force. The Martyrs Sports Festival 2020, organized by Sopore Police concluded recently with a mega event attended by senior officials of police and other departments. But while the official machinery is expected to inspire others in adherence of safety protocols to prevent spread of the deadly pandemic, the dignitaries who graced the occasion seemingly forgot to maintain even the standard operation procedures. As per an official handout the speaking at the event SSP Sopore Javaid Iqbal-JKPS promised that many more such events would be organised in future also and Sopore Police would make all the efforts it can, in encouraging the sports talent of the Police District Sopore. "At the valedictory event, none of them were seen wearing face masks while giving away the prizes. Not even the social distancing was being maintained," said a source while sharing pictures of the event. "Police is a disciplined force and thus is expected to set example for others but here the officials were not wearing facemasks while none of them maintained social distancing either," said an official on the condition of anonymity. Sources said numerous pictures of the event, which violate the norms as laid down by the Union Home Ministry with regard to Covid restrictions went viral on the social media prompting the concerned to take note of the violations. "When the police department fails to adhere to Union Home Ministry guidelines, it raises big questions on discipline," said a senior official. Sources said the Health Department and the concerned civil administration was likely to seek an explanation from the organizers of the event. Pertinently the violation of Union Government guidelines have taken place at a time when the Prime Minister Narendra Modi is personally asking the fellow citizens to observe guidelines like social distancing and wearing of masks. When contacted a senior official tried to downplay the issue saying that some critics of police were trying to "create unnecessary controversy out of an event meant for public good." |
