Insignificant areas selected in absence of formulation of Project Areas
Forest Dept displays non-seriousness on implementation of NAP
1/2/2021 11:35:41 PM
Early Times Report
jammu, Jan 2: The sheer non-seriousness on the part of the Forest Department has virtually caused setback in the implementation center's flagship National Afforestation Programme as insignificant areas were selected for execution of the programme due to non-formulation of Projects Areas.
Sources in the department told Early Times that the casual approach of the department by not taking proactive measures has literally defeated the main objective of the National Afforestation Programme.
"The objective behind this programme was to regenerate, afforest or reforest degraded forests and adjoining lands, under both public as well as private. Moreover the due priority was to be given to the treatment of eco-sensitive and disaster prone areas, such as cold and hot arid areas, strips along public infrastructure, etc.," they informed further adding that these areas were to be selected as the Project Areas for the implementation of the NAP.
They further said that there was a provision to adopt Agro-forestry model on non-forest lands, including for rehabilitation of shifting cultivation lands and tree plantation in cold arid areas.
They further informed that it has been observed that in majority of Forest Development Agencies, no such areas were selected as the Project Areas which were mentioned above for implementation of National Afforesttaion Programme and only afforestation of forest areas falling under the jurisdiction of Forest Department were selected by the Forest Development Agencies under this programme.
Sources informed that the reason behind non formulation of Project Areas has been attributed to the lack of training to the staff of Forest Development Agencies and Village Forest Committee.
